The history of Bellingham goes back hundreds of years.  The first exploration and habitation of the area occurred when ancestors of the local Native American tribes -- the Lummi, the Nooksack and the Semiahmoo -- settled the region.

Capt. George Vancouver found a rich and sophisticated culture here when he weighed anchor for the first time in nearby Birch Bay during his 1792 exploration of Puget Sound.

The Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858 brought more than 10,000 people to the bay area and Whatcom boomed as a tent city and grubstake center. But the new population vanished overnight when the British Columbian government insisted that miners report to Victoria before heading to the diggings.

Coal mining, lumber milling and a railroad connecting Bellingham to the trans-Canada line, helped the bay area boom into the late 1880s. Fishing, canning and farming also entered the mix, setting the stage for the county's modern economy.

By 1903, the four original towns along the bay -- (north to south) Whatcom, New Whatcom (Sehome), Bellingham and Fairhaven -- had been consolidated into a single entity -- Bellingham. Growth also took hold in the county as Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Nooksack and Everson all welcomed new residents.

WWU named among best colleges by U.S. News & World Report

Western Washington University is the highest-ranking public, master's-granting university in the Pacific Northwest, according to the 2009 U.S. News & World Report

Western is 19th place overall among comparable schools - public and private - in the West. Since the first U.S.News rankings in 1987, Western has been highly rated in 20 of 22 years.

Western has never before enjoyed such a diverse student body. In 1990, just 755 students of color, or less than 8 percent, attended WWU. By 2009, that number had more than doubled to 2,259 students of color, or nearly 17% of the student body. That's not just due to changing demographics: It is the result of thoughtful and committed outreach to prospective students, as well as a welcoming campus community.
